Bashing Men Online Is Fun

Why we engage in content that vilifies men

Last year, I wrote an article about men that went viral, or as viral as content can be for me.

I knew it would be controversial. I knew it would stir up some discussion but it was something I had on my mind and I wanted to write about it.

The article was about the statement ‘If the roles were reversed…’ and it became my most responded to essay in 2023.

After I wrote that article and saw the relative success it achieved, I asked myself whether this could be my niche.

Not only was this an area that I felt strongly about, but I would also have an endless list of things to write and clearly people wanted to read about it too.

Essays about relationships are popular.

And men-bashing content is even more popular.

I can’t lie, I get sucked into essays from women sharing their experiences of bad dates, bad relationships, and bad marriages. I consume these articles in a way that is probably not helpful but it’s addictive, it’s interesting, and it incites so much emotion.

It’s like watching reality TV. Insightful AND entertaining.

But is it productive?
