Seeing People Die Puts Things Into Perspective

You finally realize what matters

I can’t say that I’ve watched someone actually pass away.

As a former doctor, I attended to patients who were dying. My first time was a memorable experience.

I also verified people after they had died. And in medical school, we dissected bodies that had been donated to the university, so I have experience with death.

There was also the grey area of resuscitating someone whose heart had stopped. Very few of these people made it.

Altogether, these experiences helped shape my perspective because, when it comes down to it, what can be more devastating than losing someone you tried to cheat? This was something that I witnessed several times in my short career.

I want to clarify that most of my patients left the hospital alive, and this essay isn’t about my medical capabilities.

What I want to draw your attention to is that, when it comes down to it, health trumps everything else.

Rarely did I meet a patient in the hospital who was concerned about getting back to work…
